Why a Texas bathroom is not like a Colorado bathroom ||| Houston humidity wrecks bad bathroom builds fast. Mold, soft drywall, swollen vanity bottoms, peeling paint. If your remodeler does not know Texas climate, they skip the steps that matter here and you pay for it 18 months later. ||| Drywall instead of cement board ||| The biggest mistake we see. Drywall behind shower tile turns to mush in two years. Cement board (Durock or HardieBacker) is required in any wet zone. Costs $40 more per sheet and saves you a tear-out down the road. ||| Skipping the vent fan or going too small ||| Mirror fogs up, mold blooms in grout, paint peels near the ceiling. Code minimum is 50 CFM but Houston bathrooms need 80 to 110 CFM depending on size. Vent must duct OUTSIDE, not into the attic. ||| Cheap vanity with particleboard bottom ||| Swells with the first leak. Pick plywood or solid wood for the cabinet box. The $200 you save on a particleboard vanity costs you $800 when you replace it 3 years in. ||| No silicone caulk between tub and tile ||| Grout cracks first, water gets behind the tile, drywall rots. Marine-grade silicone caulk in every transition, replaced every 5 years. ||| Skipping the slope check on the shower floor ||| Standing water in one corner means the slope is wrong. Mold within 6 months. We level-check every shower floor before we tile. ||| Build it right the first time ||| Houston bathrooms last 20 years when built for the climate.
